Italian Civil Protection Director and COVID-19 Emergency Committee Commissioner, Roberto Borrell, stated on the 9th that as of 18:00 on the same day, Italy's total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases had increased to 143,626, an increase of 4,204 from the previous day.
On the same day, Borrell announced during a routine press conference that the death toll in Italy had risen to 18,279, including 105 doctors who have died in service. The number of recovered cases has increased to 28,470, with the death toll and recovered cases both increasing by 610 and 1,979 respectively compared to the previous day. In northern Lombardy, the hardest-hit region, the total number of deaths exceeded 10,000, rising to 10,022.
Among the currently confirmed patients, 64,873 are under home isolation, 28,399 are receiving regular hospital treatment, and 3,605 are in intensive care units (ICU) receiving treatment. Notably, the number of severe cases decreased by 88 for the sixth consecutive day, and the number of patients receiving regular hospital treatment continued to decline for the third consecutive day.
According to data released by the National Union of Medical Doctors in Italy, 9 more doctors have died due to the pandemic, bringing the total number of those who have lost their lives to 105. Data from the Italian Institute of Health shows that over 13,500 healthcare workers have been infected with the virus, accounting for about one-tenth of all infections.
To prevent further spread of the outbreak, Italy entered a nationwide lockdown starting March 10 and closed all stores other than food and pharmacies from March 12 until March 21.
